Last week about this time we shared that the collaborative mixtape by Drake and Future, was destined to reach the top of the charts and potentially break streaming and downloading records for this year. Sure enough, Drake and Future’s “What a time to Be Alive” in one week has reached the top of Billboard’s 200 Chart with an amazing 375,458 total units of sales. Many may see this as a great accomplishment, but the mixtape was projected to sell 500,000 units in the first week.
The mixtape also saw nearly 37 million streams despite only being available for streaming on Apple Music. It is important to note that the the mixtape was only released on Sunday, giving it 2 less days to accumulate sales as most new albums are released on Fridays.
The real question is, “Does this mixtape warrant the attention it is getting?” If you ask this author, the answer is no. I have listened to the project twice from beginning to end, and I can honestly say, I don’t like it. The beats are soft and the lyrical content is non-existent. I actually believe that Drake had to dumb down his regular cunning wordplay to not outshine Future. In the end the project suffers and ultimately, Future comes out the winner simply based on profit from sales and the possibility of an increased fan base.
This is one time where no one should listen to the kids Bro!!
