In the midst of the craziness that is Slim Jesus and his recent Youtube success with the track and primarily the video for “Drill Time”, he is gaining even more notoriety for his overt usage and promotion of gun violence throughout his break out video.
In a strange roundabout way , a prominent figure in hip hop, Compton’s own The Game, has publicly expressed his concerns with the Slim Jesus craze, despite liking the song initially. In a recent interview with Complex, The Game shared ” I saw Slim Jesus and I thought he was cool,”…”I thought it was dope. I was like, ‘Shit, there’s a White boy with fucking guns and he’s ready to fucking kill shit.”. However, after hearing that Slim Jesus did not live the life he portrayed in the song, Game shared the following thoughts:
“I think that Slim Jesus either really be fucking killing or he’s gonna get his ass smoked,” The Game says. “I worry about kids these days rapping about things that they’re not really about.”
Adding, that people who do live the life that Slim Jesus portrays everyday, will not be happy with Slim Jesus, and it could get him into trouble.
“Sometimes I think it’s sad because lives can be lost when playing those games,”… “Be careful, Slim Jesus.”
I wish someone a little more articulate would have voiced their concern with this situation, but does it really matter who glorifies violence. Many artists have said that their music should be seen as “entertainment”, and not a real life glorification of violence. Regardless, hip hop has in a way put the violent lives that many African-Americans live on a stage for all to see and hopefully learn from. Unfortunately, many have taken away the wrong messages from this medium, thus, the makings of Slim Jesus.
