How can Idris Elba be ‘too street’ to play 007
Too Street, Too Street I am not even certain what that means. Idris Elba is in my opinion one of the most under-rated actors today. One of the actors that does not get his due, to be honest. So when the James Bond author said he was “too street” to be 007 I had to jump all over this.
First of all let me start by saying Elba is not too street Beanie Sigel yes maybe too street this I can understand. So what we need to try and dis-cipher in this comment is what exactly he meant by too street?
The first thing that comes to mind is that he is too black or in different words black. I really hate to go here with this but I just cannot for the life of me understand what too street means when it comes to an actor. So with some further research I found out that Idris Elba in a great interview with the Los Angeles Times revealed that he was a drug dealer when he was a DJ back in the day. Okay so maybe this is what the author meant about too street because when he was younger he used to push bags of weed, of course it is important to point out that he is now 41. I am going to guess that it has nothing to do with this because the few dime bags of weed that Elba may have pushed when he was a kid in a club doesn’t exactly put him in the Pablo Escobar status of street cred.
So we go back to point one being black. So is it that society doesn’t think that we are ready for a black 007. News flash to everyone we have a black president so I think that the world can handle a black 007, just going to put it out there. Now of course I am going to have some people say that this is not a black or white thing and maybe they are right so let me list off some of the work that Idris Elba has done.
“Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom”
This an is a talent and honestly if a new 007 had to be picked black or white I always thought that he was the guy for the role. It is a shame that although we believe we think we have come so far Hollywood still has these old school thoughts.
Again I may be wrong about this but if the next 007 role passes and Idris does not get a call but just happens to get a call for the drug dealer villain don’t say I told you so.
